Questions Answers
Q. The Literacy program at Morwell, for students with high literacy needs, could be replicated or linked to equivalent programs in the other campuses. Together we could develop a universal policy and program for literacy across all the campuses, or at least, share aspects of our different programs. A. Literacy is part of VCAL which will be included in Kurnai programs at the Precinct.
Q. Are you looking at summer schools for low achievers? A. There are other programs available for these students, VCAL for instance. No summer schools are planned at this stage.
Q. Are there plans to have an enhancement studies summer school program? A. It is not planned to provide enhancement subjects at a summer school. The existing arrangements will continue. Precinct students are likely to have access to on-campus classes in the subjects taught at Monash Gippsland campus.
Q. Is any History taught at Monash Gippsland? A. Yes. Subjects include Australian History, Courtesans, Concubines and Conquest, Researching and Writing Community History, East Asian and South East Asian History.
Q. The appropriate committee from the Precinct needs to put to Monash that the Engineering course is one worth developing for the Latrobe area. With all the industry we have we need really good engineering courses. A. A submission was made to the Engineering Review Panel on behalf of the Programs and Pathways Working Party noting the importance of Engineering and stating that it would be desirable to establish pathways between GippsTAFE, GGT and Monash Engineering.
Q. Enhancement subjects need to be available for all KLAs. A. Enhancement subjects at Gippsland campus include the following:

GSC1901 Introduction to Communication Studies
GCO1815 Computer Technology
GCO1810 Programming Fundamentals
AFW1001 Introductory Accounting A
AFW1002 Introductory Accounting B
MAT1055 Maths 1A
MAT1085 Maths 1B
PHL1070 Philosophy: life, death and morality
PHL1080 Philosophy: time, self and freedom

Q. Could the precinct give some priority to music programs, ie bands, choirs, performers, etc?
A. This could be considered once the precinct is established.
Q. Will GEP become an RTO? A. Kurnai, GippsTAFE and GGT are Registered Training Organisations for various programs.
Q. How will the proposed Certificate of Professional Studies be accredited? A. Victorian Qualifications Authority is being consulted about the Certificate of Professional Studies
Q. Will there be 24 x 7 access or extended hours, weekend access, etc.? A. Access will probably be on the same basis as to the university campus, that is, restricted access on weekends and after hours.
Q. What short course opportunities have been identified? A. Course planning so far has concerned the programs currently provided by each of the partners that can be delivered at the Precinct. Once these are established the question of short courses can be explored.
Q. You should invite ACE providers onto Programs and Pathways Working Party. A. A representative of the ACE sector has participated on the Working Party
Q. How will students be counselled about pathways? You need to get educational partners in course subject areas together early in 2003. A. Kurnai staff will be providing initial counselling for secondary students. The other partners will provide advice about programs they will be delivering at the Precinct in 2004 and beyond.
Q. Students with high ENTER scores run away to university in Melbourne. How can we stop them and get them to take advantage of local facilities? A. Monash provides scholarships and has an internship scheme with local employers.The Precinct has as a major aim the encouragement of students to perceive broader options, locally and further afield.
Q. Will international students be confined to Asia/Pacific or other areas? In order to have 750 students, we will need to attract international students. A. The priority of the Precinct is to provide a unique educational facility for Gippsland students. Attracting international students will add to the educational experiences of Precinct students.
